1) “Whether the issue is inequity alone or deepening resegregation or the labyrinthine intertwining of the two, it is well past the time for us to start the work that it will take to change this.”

This quote is a good summation of the reading as well as a “call to arms” by which Jonathan Kozol tells us to begin the long overdue change necessary to fix the defacto racism that goes on in schools today.  In the reading he discusses the impact that inequity and segregation have on the racial achievement gap.  This quote shows that whatever the cause of the problem, the problem still exists, and it is up to us to fix it by creating more equal schools and promoting desegregation.

2) “Childhood is not merely basic training for utilitarian adulthood.  It should have some claims upon our mercy, not for its future value to the economic interests of competitive societies but for its present value as a perishable piece of life itself.”

This quote demonstrates Kozol’s belief that schools should not be factories that turn out future workers, but places where children are happy to learn and can enjoy their childhood.  Kozol writes extensively on his experiences visiting schools where children have been turned into “robots.”  Everything in these schools has been defined, standardized, and reduced to rote experiences from curriculum to classroom discourse to walking in the hallways.

3) One of the most disheartening experiences for those who grew up in the years when Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall were alive is to visit public schools today that bear their names, or names of other honored leaders in integration struggles that produced the temporary progress that took place in the three decades after Brown v. Board of Education, and to find out how many of these schools are bastions of contemporary segregation."

This quote is toward the beginning of the article and sets up the gist of the rest of the article.  Kozol goes on to explain the existence of  racial segregation in modern day schools.  This quote grabbed my attention because, even though I was not alive during that time period, I spent a lot of time learning about it in elementary school as well as in high school.  It seems so farfetched that this sort of segregation could be existent in modern society, but I'm sure it is.

4) "Racial segregation has come back to public education with a vengeance."

This quote represents how a huge part of history, racial segregation, has, in a way, returned to the public education because of how terrible these public schools are being treated as well as the children. The public schools, as Kozol preaches, are not getting the treatment they need for the children to succeed and its getting overlooked, as if nothing is wrong.

                                                                    Freedom Of Language

1. I believe that it is crucial for students to have their own language. I feel this way because everyone has their own personal traits that make them unique. If everyone is taught to speak the same way and think the same way it would take away from their uniqueness and potentially change them for the worse.

2. Students, artists, and football figures should have the right to freely express themselves. I think this way because no one should be able to tell you the way to think and express yourself. We live in America the land of the free. One of those freedoms is freedom of speech, not everywhere are you allowed freedom of speech. Its what makes America special and its what makes everyone else special because they are allowed to have their own style of expression.

3. I agree that students should have right to their own language but I do not agree with some ways they do express it. For example I do not think its right for Collin Kapernick to kneel for the national anthem. I am not saying he's wrong for believing what he does but considering he is an icon and people idolize him it could do worse than better. People may change the way they think because they see him doing this and want to be like him. It is also giving the wrong message to people that may not have a lot of knowledge on why he is doing it also.

4. The use of RENNS affects the quality of a students voice because it is the reasoning to their voice, language, and identity. Everyone has their own reasoning and beliefs. RENNS helps understand why they think this way. It should provide you with information and understanding on how they see things that make them think the way they think.

                                                                                         Identity
Everyone has their own interpretation of identity. To some people their own identity means very much as to others very little. To me, my identity is very important to me. I define identity as the the personal traits that one may carry that best describes and represents themselves. Life experiences mold someone into their true identity.
We go through life facing many situations that either change us for the better or for the worst. However these situations work out, they can change you and show you and everyone else who you truly are. I say this because if someone is faced with diversity, the way they deal with it could show a lot. If they are a strong person who can overcome anything or they are weak and turn over at the first sight of diversity. Anzaldua was faced with diversity. She was faced with people wanting to change her tongue but she didnt change. She didnt change because the way she spoke was part of her identity and separated her from everyone else. My identity is just as valuable to me as it is to Anzaldua and if I was her I would of done the same thing. “From my parents and Chicanos living in the valley, I picked up chicano texas spanish...”. This quote represents how her experience for living where she did molded her to speak the way she did. This relates to identity because the way she speaks is part of her identity.
As you can see the experiences that Anzaldua went through growing up made her speak the way she speaks which also made her who she is.

How To Contain A Wild Tongue

1. The opening scene can connect to the overall point/message of the essay and title because Anzaldua was not able to control her tongue. This shows how it can be hard to hold some stuff in while speaking your mind and that connects to the title because she was not able to contain her tongue.

2. Anzaldua used spanish throughout the story and I think she did it to show her different style of tongue. She used it to show her uniqueness in her tongue even though it made it a little confusing at times.

3. Yes, because in a way Academic English and Spanish are similar. They both speak formal when taking to someone with authority. Chicano Spanish uses slang and when speaking to someone with authority you do not speak Chicano Spanish. Usually more educated people speak Academic English and Spanish because they were able to get a good education as people that speak Chicano Spanish didn't.

4. In the business world it is a necessity to use Academic English because it is the proper way to speak. Slang is not accepted. If you use slang it could show that you were not educated properly and are not fit for a job that you need to be educated for.

5. There are couple of different English identities. One being a texting tone which is a form of slang where people shorten up words while texting nd use phrases to make it shorter and quicker to type. For example you would say txt instead of text.

6. When me and my friends are together id say i talk differently around them than others. We have words that if we say it we know what they mean as to if we were to say the same word to someone else they would not understand what I am talking about.

7. If i am with my friends we commonly speak in non-standard english because we are comfortable infant of each other and sometimes do not have to sound educated and have educated conversations. If I am speaking with my mother or professor i would speak standard english because there is a higher level of respect between me and my mother/professor and my friends.

8. That quote means that everyone has their own type of language that makes them, them. This connects to identity because everyones language could be different because of what they went through in their life that made them speak the way they do whether its from life situations or jus their education.

9.The opening and conclusion connect because they way she spoke made her who she was, it was her identity. In the start she was forced to change her language but she didn't want to because it wasn't her but in the end she brings up again that she never changed who she was which made her a stronger person.

10. The language i speak most definitely is apart of my identity. Its apart of my identity because the way i was raised and the way i was educated growing up molded my language into the way that it is now and is different for everyone. My language is unique in a way that it is mine and makes me who i am today.

11. My identity is very important to me because the way i am separates me from everyone else and makes me different. It shows me how special I am because I am different from everyone else. Anzaldua cares about her identity too because like said in the opening paragraphs that the teachers tried to change her but she didn't do it and stood up for herself.
